30 for 30 #16: Sunshiny Day

Top and Cardigan: Old Navy
Skirt: Thrifted
Shoes: Kohl's
Belt: Thrifted
Necklace: Self Made

Today I'm attending the promotion ceremony of an officer in our church, followed by a celebratory dinner.  I was thisclose to taking a one day break from the challenge and wearing a little white dress I picked up before the challenge.  This outfit won out though.

So I was making faces at the camera today, and remembered that I can do this:
Yes. Be jealous.

Embrace It

I didn't even realize until I got on Facebook this morning. Today is Alex's birthday.

I met Alex last summer at bible camp. He was tall, lanky kid, all arms and legs. He had a sarcastic sense of humor, and loved to sing and dance with all his might. He was kind of quiet, but always made everyone laugh.

Last year today, I was at bible camp with Alex. It was his 16th birthday, and everyone celebrated with him. Kids blew up balloons and decorated the dining hall. A cake was made, and we sang. The love in that room was obvious.

A few months passed. And suddenly Alex was no longer with us.

A service team was visiting the camp to help with some much needed repairs. Alex was part of the group of local kids that joined them. One afternoon after a long few days of work, the kids took the team to swim in Lake Superior. The current came in, and two boys were lost in it. Alex left the beach in a bag that day.

I find myself remembering Alex today, on what would have been his 17th birthday. I only knew him for a few months, but the joy he injected into my life was apparent. His spirit was contagious, and the community felt the loss intensely.

The loss of Alex reminds me how short life really is. How fragile it is. And even more, how important is is to live intentionally. I find myself in tears today, just as I was the day he died. Life is SO short. And it can be gone in an instant.

I know I could live a long life, and die peacefully in old age. I know I could get in the car today and never come home. But however long I'm allowed to live on this Earth, I don't want to regret a moment. Not one thing. Events like this are hard to stomach, but I'm thankful for the reminder to live each day like it's my last. I need it, because I take life for granted. So I don't want to push the pain away, I want to embrace it.

So I wished Alex happy birthday on his facebook wall. I told him I remembered being with him last year and that party we had. And I embraced the pain.

30 for 30 #15: Dress = Tunic

Dress: Thrifted (Old Navy)
Jeans: Old Navy
Sandals: JC Penney
Necklace: Hand me down
Scarf: Thrifted

I still can't decide if I really like this outfit or not.  Something about it looks kind of funky to me.

This is one of the first scarves I ever bought.  I probably bought this like 7 or 8 years ago, and it's just starting to get some wear.

Outfit #15 means I'm halfway done with the challenge!  This makes me a little sad.  It's been a lot of fun so far.
Things I've learned so far:
1) It's a lot easier to dress when you only have 30 items to choose from.
2) Accessories are my friend.
3) I really can and do look cute.
4) I actually can dress in more than sweats and a tee when I'm working from home.  Looking cute, both for myself and my husband, is a good thing.

Granted, what you're seeing here is about half my wardrobe as it is.  I'm not one of those people with an overflowing closet, and I try and prune it regularly.  But still...this is showing me that I don't need to go on a shopping spree with each new season, or complain about what I have when I can't.

Yummy Lotions: Not Diabetes Friendly

Last night I was getting ready for bed when I felt the high blood sugar monster creeping it.  I crawled into bed, reached for my favorite bath and body works white tea and ginger lotion, and tested.  The verdict? 277 mg/dl.

Grr.  Correction bolus delivered, I crawled under the covers to relax before testing again later.

Half hour passes, and I decided to test again.  277 mg/dl, once again.  Well, maybe the insulin needs more time. I wait another half hour and test yet again. This time, 300 mg/dl.  Umm...what?

This is when I realize that I had spread that lovely lotion all over my hands before commencing this series of tests.  I got up, washed my hands, and tested again.  266 mg/dl.  That's more like it.

So don't let B&BW fool you.  Test before indulging in their yummy lotions. :)

30 for 30 #14: 80s Classy

Necklace: Garage Sale Find
Earrings: Gramma's
Everything else: Thrifted

I just picked up this lovely little necklace this past weekend for a whopping 50 cents at a garage sale. I love garage sales.

I feel like this gives off a slightly 80s vibe.  Side pony tails always manage to do that for me.  Looking at the photos now, it's not really very 80s.  But hey, in my mind side pony tail = 80s.  Always.
Today is just a stay at home and work day.  The humidity is back at it today, but I'm trying to dress in something different than a tank and shorts.
I also had a chance to try some dry shampoo today.  I bought some Sauve a few weeks back, and got one use out of it.  It worked just fine, but the second time I went to use it, the can was empty.  So either my husband has been dry shampooing his hair, or the can was defective.  I bought some TRESemme, and gave it a go today.  Seems to work pretty well, I like the smell, and it gives my fine hair some texture.  I try not to wash it everyday, since it dries out easily, so any shortcut I can try is a good thing. :)

30 for 30 #13: Green

Top: Old Navy
Cardigan and Belt: Thrifted
Cargo Capris: TJ Maxx
Shoes: JC Penney
Hat: Gift from 16th birthday
Earrings: Claire's

I've read that wearing the same color from head to toe can make you look taller.  I don't usually attempt this tactic because I own mostly blue jeans, and I only have so many blue tops.  I'm not sure if the green is doing it for me today, or just making me look a bit nautical.  In any case, it's fun. :)
I thrifted a fun little red, white, and blue plaid hat (which will probably make an appearance this weekend) last week, and my husband asked me if I had any others and why didn't I wear them.  I have 2 others, this being one of them.  It was a gift from a good friend for my 16th birthday, and I've never worn it much, as cute as it is.  I'm not a big hat person, but it worked today.

Side note: I'm looking for photos to feature on my photoblog next month while I'm on vacation.  Check it out!

30 for 30 #12: Sneaky

Dress: TJ Maxx
Cardigan and Belt: Thrifted
Shoes: Walmart
Watch: Target
Necklace: Craft Fair Find

My husband says this dress makes my legs look longer. Woot! :)

I'm pretty sure this is my favorite 30 for 30 outfit to date.  This is also my first adventure in belting.  Coincidence?  I think not.
This is what I wore to church and the rest of the day.  The Northern girl that I am loves that it's cooled down enough for me to be comfortable in a cardigan again.  Summer is not the time to be doing this challenge.  But, that's why it's a challenge right?

Also, I have a seeecret!
Behold!  Shorts!  I always feel like this dress is a bit too short; when I sit down I don't like the amount of skin that touches the seat.  I felt like a genius when I thought to put on these shorts.  Hehe... :)

30 for 30 #11: Fountains Are Fun

Tank and Shoes: Kohl's
Jeans: Old Navy
Scarf: Thrifted
Necklace: Self-made

We spent our day gallivanting around from garage sale to garage sale, and scored quite a few rather awesome items.  I manage to procure a case for my massive 17" laptop, some CDs, books, a sweater, and a necklace, all for under $20.  I love garage sales.
On the way home we stopped by the park to snap these pictures.
The necklace is another throw together from the craft store last week, and I just thrifted the scarf yesterday.  Yay!

30 for 30 #10: Black

Top: JC Penney
Jeans: Old Navy
Shoes: Shopko
Necklace: Self-made

I had a totally different outfit on this morning.  It was ridiculously humid though, and I was sweating the instant I put it on.  Maybe if it cools off tomorrow you'll get to see it. :)  My husband had the day off, and we did some shopping and saw Mr. Popper's Penguins at the brand new theater in town.
This necklace is part of the goodies I got at the craft store earlier this week.  I'm really happy with how it turned out.
I also scored some awesome belts and scarves at the thrift store today.  I'd like to do more belting, but I've shied away from it due to my short torso; I always felt like it looked weird.  Anyway, I'm finding that skinny belts look better, and I found a few today.  Hopefully I'll be able to work those into some of my last 20 outfits in this challenge.

I was leaning up against a pole in the pavilion when a small child caught my eye.  She was staring intently at me, so I turned and smiled.

"What did you do to your arm?"

I was sporting a pump site on my arm that day.  "You mean this?" I said, pointing at it.

She nodded.

"Well, I have diabetes.  This thing gives me the medicine* that I need to keep me healthy.  It comes out of this." I said, as I pulled my pump from my pocket.  "This is an insulin pump."

She continued to stare, unsure.

"Does that make sense?"

She nodded quickly, and went back to her coloring book, apparently content with my answer.

I smiled, and turned my attention back to the yelling coming from the dunk tank about 10 feet away.  It took me a minute to realize what had just happened, and then I found myself wishing that everyone were content with such a simple explanation.  That that is really was just that simple.

*I know this isn't the most accurate term, but through the years it's proven the best way to explain what insulin is to young kids.

30 for 30 #9: Rainy Days

Cargo Capris: TJ Maxx
Shoes: Kohl's
Earrings: Claire's
Bracelet: Gift
Watch: Target

I actually wore my hair down most of the day.  The rain had other ideas.
We spent most of the day at the annual FRG Family Fun Day.  Despite the rain, it really was a fun day.  After that was over, we did some shopping and hit up the local Korean place for dinner.  Nom.
This challenge has gotten me more excited about accessories.  I went to Michael's today and picked up some super cute pendants and chains to make a few long necklaces of my own.  I also have some old brooches that are awesome, but never get worn cause I'm not much of brooch person.  I'd like to make those into necklaces as well.

30 for 30 #8: Classy

Top: Thrifted
Skirt: TJ Maxx
Shoes: Payless
Jewelry: Gramma's

I realized after wearing this last week that this skirt needed to be paired with a more fitted top.  This purple top was a thrift store find from college, and it's a favorite.

Faux pearls are one of my favorites accessories.  I think I wore a strand just about everyday in high school with a tshirt and jeans.

I stalked these shoes at Payless years ago, and ended up getting them on sale for less than $10. :)  I've only recently started to wear them as they fit a bit tightly up until recently.  Weird.  I guess my feet shrunk?

30 for 30 #7: Orange

Tank and Jeans: Old Navy
Shoes: JC Penney
Necklaces and Bracelets: Gifts
Watch: Target
Earrings: Claire's

Apparently I'm not very smiley today.  Sorry.  It was a good, but sleep deprived weekend.

I've been rockin' a pump site on my arm since yesterday morning, if you can see that nice little white bump. :)

I had a hard time getting a good shot of this bracelet.  I got it at Christmas from a lady in church, and it has Psalm 62:1-2 printed on the pieces.

30 for 30 #6: Playground Days

Top: Sears
Skirt: Thrifted
Shoes: Payless
Necklace and Bracelet: Gramma's
Ring: Gift from SJS
Earrings: Gramma's

So if I ever for real start a fashion blog, it will be called "My Grandmother's Jewelry".  Clearly, this is all I own.

I got the bracelet and necklace/brooch from my grandma, but the ring was a gift from my husband this past valentine's day.  Cute how they all match. :)

There's several playground pieces around our neighborhood that I've been wanting to take pictures at for a while.  So today we did just that. :)

My husband and I. :)

Happy Father's Day!
